No matter how fresh your veggies or fruits are when you buy them, they will inevitably rot after a certain period of time. But here at SooperChef, we have found out some resourceful tips and tricks that will help you keep your fruits and vegetables fresher for longer.

1. Place Fruits and Veggies in a Dry Environment

Moisture is one of the factors that encourage the process of molding. A good trick to thwart this process is to place a dry paper towel inside the container holding the vegetables or fruits. This paper towel will absorb all the excess moisture and prevent the fruit from rotting.

2. Don’t Store Certain Types of Vegetables and Fruits in the Fridge

Many vegetables like cucumbers, bell peppers, and tomatoes etc should be stored at room temperature because of the fact that bell peppers lose their freshness and tomatoes and cucumbers turn slimy when stored in a refrigerator. Moreover, fruits should not be refrigerated until or unless they have completely ripened. Otherwise, they rot much more quickly.

3. Sliced Vegetables Should be Stored in Water

Sliced and peeled veggies like carrots, cucumbers, and radishes when placed inside a jar with a small amount of water, can be kept fresh for a long time in a refrigerator.

4. Store Fruits and Veggies in the Warmer Part of the Fridge

At low temperatures, it is difficult to retain the freshness and aroma of vegetables and fruits. To store the taste and freshness of veggies and fruits, it is necessary to store them in the part of the fridge with slightly higher temperature.

5. Potatoes and Onions should be Stored in Different Places

If you store potatoes and onions in the same place, the latter one would start sprouting shoots and become inedible.

6. Store your Potatoes along with some Apples

Potatoes, when stored alongside apples, stay fresh for much longer.

7. Veggies Stockpiled at Room Temperature Need Air

Vegetables and fruits shouldn’t be kept hidden in cupboards or they would rot and mold much faster than normal. Instead, they should be placed in open air in boxes or places where they are exposed to a good air flow.

8. Store Grapes in Polyethylene Bags

If you want to store your grapes in a way that they would retain their fresh texture and juicy taste, then place them in a polyethylene bag before placing them in a refrigerator. Also, make sure that all of the grapes aren’t stored as one big bunch as the ones at the bottom would be crushed to a pulp.

9. Potatoes Hate the Sun

Potatoes, when placed under direct sunlight, will not only rot but also get toxic and extremely dangerous to eat. To avoid this, place the potatoes in a dark room away from sunlight in a wooden box or plastic basket.

10. Garlic and Onions love Darkness

Just like potatoes, garlic and onions should be placed in dark places. If you don’t have a storage or big place to do that, you can simply do it by placing them in paper bags with holes in them. The holes would allow air flow and the paper bags would fulfill their needs of sunlight.
