Water makes about 60 percent of our body and during days like today when you are going through a fast when the temperature outside is about 43 degrees, it’s easy to suffer dehydration. Dehydration is the deficiency of water in the body and it can lead to adverse effects like heat strokes, unconsciousness and even death in severe cases, as every living cell in the human body requires water to function properly. The writing team of sooperchef.pk has listed five adverse effects of dehydration on the human body.

The Heart Starts to Race

When we are dehydrated, our blood volume increases and causes a drop in the blood pressure. This pummeling of blood pressure causes our heart to increase its rate of beating which can lead to the feeling of lightheadedness, weakness, and lethargy. In some cases it a pounding or fluttering feeling of uneasiness can be felt too.

The Risk of Hypovolemic Shock Increases

In severe cases of dehydration, the blood pressure and blood volume of the human body can drop low to a dangerous state where the vital organs start to shut down and the blood is unable to pump blood to the body. This type of life-threatening situation is called the hypovolemic shock. But it is worth mentioning that this occurs only in the very severe cases of blood loss or fluid loss.

The Risk of Kidney Problems Increases

If you are routinely dehydrated and don’t intake fluids properly, your odds of having painful kidney diseases like kidney stones will go up. When the body is dehydrated, the body signals the kidneys to retain more water and excrete less urine. What this does is concentrates the urine and the increase of kidney ailments like stones are more likely in this condition. Furthermore, prolonged or repeated bouts of dehydration can also lead to more severe conditions like urinary tract infections and kidney failures.

Heat Stroke

Prolonged exposures to the sun are dangerous on their own, but with a dehydrated body, which lacks the ability to cool itself down, can be devastating. Heatstroke is the most serious form of heat injury and dehydrated people are most prone to suffer from it. The symptoms of heat stroke include confusion, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, loss of consciousness, red and dry skin that feels excruciatingly hot, nausea and shallow, rapid breathing etc.

Confusion and Seizures

Minerals with an electrical charge like potassium, sodium, and calcium are known as electrolytes. They help carry electrical signals between the cells and we get them through our diet. But when the body is dehydrated, the electrolytic balance of the body is disorientated. This imbalance of electrolytes can cause confusion, fainting and in severe cases, it can lead to seizures. If you experience these symptoms and you haven’t urinated in the last 12 hours, get yourself checked as you might be suffering from the type of dehydration that calls for immediate treatment with IV fluids.

The Mouth and Throat Feel Dry

It is a common feeling while suffering from dehydration that the mouth and throat feel like a scorching desert. This happens because the water levels of the body drop so low that the salivary glands are unable to produce any saliva, which leaves the mouth and throat with a dry itchy feeling. Saliva is necessary for proper food digestion and eradication of germ build up in the mouth.

Bad Breath

Dehydration can lead to a really embarrassing situation, bad breath as it leads to a buildup of excessive amounts of bacteria in the mouth. Medically, this condition is known as halitosis. Drinking plenty of water keeps the tongue and the salivary glands adequately hydrated and diminish the chance of developing bad breath. read more: Top Five Foods to Avoid At Sehri
